Ok so here is my little spider jumper.
::NOTE:: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that if you make your own pneumatic cylinders that you cement the ends on BEFORE you put air to it!!
YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T!!!!!! LOTS O PAIN!!!!!
I decided after hearing all the horror stories about home made pneumatic cylinders that I would upgrade the spider jumper with a actual pneumatic cylinder. And let me tell you WOW, what a difference. It is quieter, faster, and so much safer. I recommend this to anyone making there own.
Made from 1" PVC pipe and some scrap wood. You can get most of what you need from the pictures. I tried to label things to make it a bit easier to know what they are.
Plumbers tape is the greatest invention EVER made! This stuff is flexible, 2 different sized pre drilled holes, strong, and even stronger if you double or triple it! I used it here to secure the cylinder to the board but made it so it would still swivel up and down when the ram extends. I did put 2 raps of black duct tape on the cylinder before putting the plumbers tape on. The plumbers tape didn't line up the holes the way i wanted so the black tape gave it that extra bulk to grip better and make the holes line up for the bolt.
This is the rear end of the pneumatic cylinder. NOTE: the arrow is pointing to the quick connect high pressure fitting on the end of the cylinder. If you have ever tried to get a high pressure brass fitting to "not leak" GOOD LUCK! I know it can be done BUT!!!!!
THESE THINGS ARE AWESOME!!! Just push the hose in and that's it! these things hold the hose in and if you pull on the hose without pushing in on the lock ring the hose don't go anywhere.. I LOVE THESE THINGS
And even better, they are cheap cheap cheap... got about 30 of them at home depot. Run about $2.00 each but OMG it is the best money I have ever spent! They got elbows, straights, in almost any size you could ever want.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, GO GET AS MANY OF THESE AS YOU CAN if your using pneumatic props! I cleared out 2 home depots... If you cant find these where you live try here... quick connects These are better and even cheaper, but I don't like to wait on shipping... LOL
This shows the zip tie I pushed through the bottom of the spider to secure it to the PVC elbow. I drilled a hole all the way through the elbow to make sure the spider was gonna stay on it. Fog will be going through this pipe making it appear to come out of the spiders mouth when popped up. There will also be a green gel strobe light installed under the spider to give a bigger oomph! So the fog will look green when it shoots out. I'm sure I will add a creepy spider sound to it as well. When the ram fires, it already makes a screeching sound that I was not expecting but ends up being a good thing. Sends chills down my wife's spine LOL (she HATES spiders)
So here is the attachment for the main pop up rod and the pneumatic ram. This is the trickiest part of the whole project. Figuring out where to put the bolt for the best performance. This is just a trial and error kind of thing. But don't drill any more holes in the PVC than you have to. That would make the pipe unstable.
So still need to paint everything black and hook up the fog... Ill get a new video out when that's done.
I hope this helps you guys and you come up with something to use this for. I was going to use this prop to put a scary guy on and his arms were made out of PVC as well, and when he popped up fog came out of his hands. But I am gonna make a different setup for that.
I will put up how I made my pneumatic cylinders if you want to go that route. They are super easy to make and very very cheap, and they have tons of power if you make them right.
~~UPDATE Pics~~
Please send me any pics or vids you take of this idea, I would love to see what YOU did with this idea!
HAPPY HAUNTING!!!
